Mid-Summer Care For Your Perennial Flowers

Mid-Summer Care For Your Perennial Flowers
Mid-summer in Portland usually means warm, dry spells, so the main goal is to keep perennials consistently watered without overdoing it. Water deeply in the early morning 1–2 times a week, depending on heat and soil type, so moisture reaches the roots. Check the top few inches of soil first; if it’s still damp, wait another day. Remember to avoid overhead watering and, instead, keeping water close to the ground with your hose or drip system.
Add 2–3 inches of mulch around plants to hold moisture and keep roots cooler, but keep it a little away from stems and crowns. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage more blooms and prevent the plant from wasting energy on seed production. If plants look tired, remove yellowing leaves and cut back straggly growth, but avoid heavy pruning in peak heat.
Feed lightly only if needed. Many perennials do fine without extra fertilizer in midsummer, and too much can create weak growth. Watch for stress signs like wilting in the afternoon that doesn’t recover by evening, scorched leaf edges, or powdery mildew in humid areas. If a plant is in full sun and struggling, temporary afternoon shade can help.
For newly planted perennials, pay extra attention: they need more frequent watering than established plants until their roots settle in.
